We Analyzed 100 Serial Killers Across 4 Zodiac Systems — Here’s What We Found

1. The Viral Claim We Decided to Fact-Check

One of the most repeated astrology claims online is that four signs dominate serial-killer birth dates: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. The claim looks persuasive because famous names can be placed beneath each sign. Ted Bundy is Sagittarius. Jeffrey Dahmer is Gemini. John Wayne Gacy and Richard Ramirez are Pisces. Ed Gein is Virgo.

The problem is selection bias. A graphic can look convincing simply by choosing examples that support the intended pattern while ignoring equally famous cases born under other signs. Our serial killers by zodiac sign analysis was designed to test that claim with a fixed 100-person dataset rather than a hand-picked list.

The answer is mixed. Gemini did rank first, and Pisces tied for second. But Virgo and Sagittarius each appeared only six times — well below Aries and Libra, which each appeared eleven times.

The viral “four killer signs” pattern did not survive the larger sample. Looking at serial killers by zodiac sign across all 12 signs produced a much flatter distribution than the meme suggests.

2. Serial Killers by Zodiac Sign: Which Sign Appeared Most Often?

Astrological interpretation: why Gemini attracts attention

Gemini is a Mutable Air sign ruled by Mercury. Traditional astrology associates it with mental speed, adaptability, language, curiosity, multiplicity and the ability to move between different social or intellectual frames.

In an archetypal shadow reading, those same qualities can be described as fragmentation, restlessness, over-intellectualisation, compartmentalisation or a split between different social personas. That language may sound striking in the context of criminal cases, but it must be handled carefully: these are symbolic shadow themes, not criminological predictors.

The data itself gives an important corrective. Gemini had 12 cases, but Pisces, Aries and Libra each had 11. A one-case lead in a 100-person sample is not evidence of a special “Gemini effect”. This is why rankings of serial killers by zodiac sign need statistical context rather than headline-driven conclusions.

3. Serial Killers by Zodiac Sign and Element

Statistical check: the four-element distribution produced a chi-square p-value of approximately 0.792. In practical terms, the observed 29/25/24/22 split does not provide evidence of a meaningful departure from an even 25/25/25/25 distribution.

4. Cardinal vs Fixed vs Mutable: A Surprising Tie

Cardinal and Mutable signs tied at 35 cases each. Fixed signs accounted for 30.

Why this matters for the viral claim

Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces — the four signs most often grouped together in the viral serial-killer meme — are all Mutable. If that meme reflected a strong underlying pattern, we might expect Mutable signs to dominate clearly.

They did not. Mutable signs tied with Cardinal signs.

Astrologically, Mutable energy is associated with adaptation, transition, flexibility and responsiveness. Its shadow can be inconsistency, diffusion or instability. Cardinal energy is associated with initiation, action and direction; its shadow can become forcefulness, impatience or over-control. Fixed energy represents persistence, loyalty and endurance, with rigidity or obsession as possible shadow expressions.

The sample does not support singling out one modality as uniquely dominant.

5. Chinese Zodiac: Dog Ranked First

In Chinese zodiac symbolism, Dog is commonly associated with loyalty, vigilance, protection, justice and strong moral instincts. Its shadow archetype can involve suspicion, defensiveness, pessimism or rigid in-group/out-group boundaries.

Dog appeared 14 times in this dataset, with Rooster second at 12. But Chinese Zodiac frequencies require special caution. Because the system operates in repeating 12-year cycles, historical generation clustering can affect the result. A group concentrated in particular decades may over-represent certain animals even without any meaningful behavioural association.

The overall 12-animal distribution was also not statistically significant under a simple uniform test (p ≈ 0.559).

6. Celtic Tree Signs: Hawthorn Formed the Largest Category

Hawthorn ranked first with 15 cases. In the modern Celtic Tree Zodiac framework used by ZodiacRoots, Hawthorn is associated with paradox, transition, layered identity and the ability to hold contradictory qualities at once. Its shadow symbolism can be read through ambiguity, concealment or difficulty being easily categorised.

That sounds compelling in a study of notorious criminal figures — but this is exactly where methodological discipline matters. The Celtic Tree categories are tied directly to calendar date ranges, which means they are not statistically independent from Western Sun signs.

We also do not present the modern Celtic Tree Zodiac as a historically attested ancient Celtic zodiac equivalent to Western astrology. It is used here as a modern symbolic framework.

7. The Most Unexpected Tzolkin Result: Chuen

Chuen: intelligence, play, artistry and the Trickster archetype

Chuen appeared 11 times among 20 possible Tzolkin Day Signs, compared with an even-distribution expectation of five per sign. Ben and Imix followed with eight each.

In contemporary symbolic readings of the Tzolkin, Chuen is often associated with creativity, intelligence, play, pattern-making, artistry and Trickster energy. In shadow language, the Trickster archetype can express through manipulation, gamesmanship, masks, inversion or the use of intelligence without stable ethical direction.

That makes Chuen an intriguing editorial finding — but not a statistically proven one. The overall 20-sign distribution produced p ≈ 0.326, which does not meet conventional statistical significance.

8. Cross-Tradition Patterns: Where the Systems Actually Become Interesting

ZodiacRoots is built around a simple principle: one symbolic system should not be treated as the whole person. The most interesting question is not merely which category ranks first in each tradition, but whether independent systems create repeated symbolic themes.

Exploratory clusters worth noting

Because the sample is only 100 people, these clusters are exploratory rather than confirmatory. The most notable combinations included:

• Fire + Pig: 7 observed versus about 2.5 expected under simple independence.
• Earth + Dog: 6 observed versus about 3.4 expected.
• Mutable + Rat: 6 observed versus about 2.8 expected.
• Earth + Cauac: 4 observed versus about 1.2 expected.
• Air + Cimi: 4 observed versus about 1.7 expected.

How to read these symbolically

Fire + Pig combines Western themes of intensity, drive and immediacy with a Chinese archetype commonly associated with appetite, generosity, sensuality and wholehearted engagement. In shadow language, the combination can be framed as excess, impulsive appetite or difficulty moderating intensity.

Earth + Dog combines structure, persistence and practical orientation with loyalty, vigilance and moral boundary themes. Its shadow symbolism can look like rigidity, entrenched judgement or defensive persistence.

Mutable + Rat combines adaptability and situational responsiveness with strategic intelligence, resourcefulness and survival instinct. Symbolically, this can create a highly adaptive archetype — constructive when flexible and inventive, shadowed when opportunistic or evasive.

Earth + Cauac is a more paradoxical pairing: grounded Earth symbolism meeting a Tzolkin archetype often associated with storm, renewal and catalytic change. This is the kind of contradiction that illustrates why multi-tradition synthesis is richer than reducing a person to one sign.

Air + Cimi combines mental distance and abstraction with transformation, endings and transition symbolism. Archetypally, it can suggest the mind as a tool for navigating rupture or liminal states.

9. Two Famous Names We Deliberately Excluded

Charles Manson

Manson is culturally inseparable from discussions of serial murder, but his role as leader and instigator of murders committed by followers makes his classification less directly comparable with perpetrators in the main statistical sample. His exclusion does not imply that he was uninvolved in the murders; it reflects a methodological decision to keep the core sample focused on more directly comparable perpetrator profiles.

David Parker Ray

Ray is widely known by the “Toy-Box Killer” label and is widely suspected of multiple murders, but no homicide conviction provides a directly comparable evidentiary basis to the core sample. He is therefore discussed as a boundary case rather than counted in the 100.

10. What This Study Does — and Does Not — Show

The responsible conclusion is not “Geminis are dangerous” or “Dog years produce killers”. The responsible conclusion is that small descriptive imbalances can look dramatic in viral graphics, while statistical context often makes them far less extraordinary. A responsible study of serial killers by zodiac sign must separate descriptive ranking from claims of prediction or causation.

11. Methodology & Data Limitations

The core ZodiacRoots dataset contains 100 unique individuals selected as well-known serial-killer cases with multiple documented or judicially established victims. Ambiguous or methodologically non-comparable cases were excluded from the statistical sample and may be discussed separately.

External reference standard

For case-definition context, we used a conservative inclusion approach informed by the
FBI research definition of serial murder,
which describes a single offender killing at least two victims in separate events at different times.

Birth-date and sign verification

Birth dates were cross-checked against publicly available biographical and criminal-reference sources. Birth dates falling on solar-ingress days were checked against astronomical ephemerides. Where no reliable birth time was available, the sign occupying the majority of the local calendar day was used and the limitation was documented rather than relying only on generic calendar cut-offs.

Statistical context

Simple chi-square goodness-of-fit tests were used as descriptive checks against equal-category expectations where appropriate. The resulting p-values were approximately:

Western signs: 0.648
Elements: 0.792
Modalities: 0.779
Chinese Zodiac: 0.559
Tzolkin: 0.326

None crossed the conventional p < 0.05 threshold. These tests are intentionally simple and do not control for population birth-season patterns, geography, cohort effects, historical reporting bias or the way the sample itself was assembled.

Important limitations

This is not an epidemiological study and does not use a matched control population. Birth rates are not perfectly uniform across months or years. Chinese Zodiac categories are especially vulnerable to generational clustering. Some symbolic systems share calendar dependence, so apparent cross-system overlap may be mechanically produced.

13. Final Takeaway

The original viral claim was only partly right. Gemini did rank first. Pisces remained near the top. But Virgo and Sagittarius did not dominate at all. At the elemental level, Air led — yet only modestly. Outside Western astrology, entirely different categories rose to the top.

The deeper lesson is exactly why ZodiacRoots uses a multi-tradition framework: one label rarely tells the whole story.
